Next week, Xbox's third-annual Developer Direct will go live, and fans are eagerly speculating about the identity of a mysterious fourth game that will be revealed during the show. Xbox's Developer Directs began in January 2023, providing a platform for developers to speak directly with Xbox fans about upcoming titles. The first Developer Direct was notable for the surprise shadow drop of Tango Gameworks' critically acclaimed Hi-Fi Rush, setting high expectations for future events. Last year’s event unveiled details on highly anticipated titles like Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and even featured Square Enix showcasing Visions of Mana.
Now, with the third Developer Direct set to stream on January 23, Xbox has confirmed that fans can expect updates on three 2025 games: Doom: The Dark Ages, South of Midnight, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a visually impressive turn-based RPG from Sandfall Interactive. In addition to these, a fourth game will be revealed, though Xbox has kept its identity under wraps, fueling speculation.
In a recent article by Jez Corden for Windows Central, a key detail about the fourth game was shared. Corden revealed that the game is “a new entry in a legendary Japanese IP with decades of history,” hinting that it may not be from Xbox’s first-party studios as previously speculated. This has led fans to imagine possibilities such as Fable, The Outer Worlds 2, or even Gears of War: E-Day as potential candidates.
Considering Square Enix appeared in last year’s Developer Direct with Visions of Mana, some fans are hoping for a new Final Fantasy game. However, given that Square Enix remains partnered with PlayStation for Final Fantasy, and with no major mainline Final Fantasy or FF7 Remake games on the horizon, this seems unlikely. Other franchises, like Resident Evil from Capcom and Persona from Sega, have also been suggested. While Resident Evil games traditionally debut at PlayStation events, Resident Evil 9 has been rumored to be in development and could make its debut at this event. Persona 6, which has been rumored for release in 2025, could also make an appearance, given Xbox’s recent partnership with Sega on Metaphor: ReFantazio.
Another intriguing possibility is the return of Ninja Gaiden, a franchise closely tied to Xbox during the original Xbox era. Team Ninja, the developers behind Ninja Gaiden, could be collaborating with Xbox once again to bring a revival of this beloved series.
While all of this remains speculation, fans can tune in to Xbox’s Developer Direct on January 23 to discover more about South of Midnight, Doom: The Dark Ages, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and the much-anticipated reveal of the mysterious fourth game.
